Avalon is the only incorporated city on Santa Catalina Island, in the California Channel Islands, and the southernmost city in Los Angeles County.The city is a resort community with the waterfront dominated by tourism-oriented businesses. The older parts of the town on the valley floor consist primarily of small houses and two and three-story buildings in various traditional architectural styles.

It is so wonderful that the Avalon Casino (not a casino as we think if it--no gambling) has been quite well preserved. It is an art deco masterpiece, consisting mainly of a theater and a ballroom. The history is fascinating. A truly classic movie palace, situated in Avalon on Santa Catalina Island, just 22 miles off the coast from Los Angeles. The Avalon Theatre opened on May 29, 1929 with Douglas Fairbanks in “The Iron Mask”. It is located in the Casino Building, built by chewing gum magnet William Wrigley Jnr, and is located beneath the Casino Ballroom. After 90 years as a haven for movie buffs on Catalina Island, the Avalon Theatre in the Catalina Casino is ending its run as a traditional film venue. The Avalon Theatre opened 29th May 1928 with a screening of the Douglas Fairbanks film "The Iron Mask". Architect were Sumner M. Spaulding and Walter I. Webber, with interior murals by John Gabriel Beckman. The theatre is on the ground floor of William Wrigley Jr.'s monumental Casino Building, with the ballroom above it.
